Planning a successful photography trip to Iceland is complex, time consuming and not a little daunting.
There’s so much to see you can literally spend days trying to decide where to go.
Without local knowledge you end up missing the best sites (not always the obvious ones) or turning up at the wrong time (way too many people).

They plan their tours with great attention to detail, yet enough flexibility to adjust to weather and lighting conditions.Our tour will take in some of the well known locations for great photographs (Jokulsarlon ice lagoon and diamond beach, Stokksnes and Vestrahorn, Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls), but we will also visit lesser known places (and we're not saying where they are on here for obvious reasons!) where you'll have an opportunity for some more unique images. Yes, we'll make sure you are at stunning sites at the best possible time of day. Yes, we’ll be on hand to help you get great images while improving your technique over the course of the tour. Yes, we’ll do all we can to make you feel at ease to ask questions and explore new techniques. But we also aim to make your experience a memorable one, enjoying great company, in a special place.From experience we know getting a sense of the 'type of tour' can help you decide if it is for you and help things to run smoothly. One of the challenges for photographers is that we all have different preferences and approaches. These guidelines are designed to help you discern if this tour is for you.EVERYONE IS THERE TO HELP ONE ANOTHER
We all have ideas and knowledge to share, so this will be a mutual learning experience. It doesn't matter whether you are a beginner or a seasoned photographer, whether you have the latest gear with a gazillion lenses and filter systems or one camera and one lens. You simply need to have a desire to take photos and an openness to learn from others.There will be lots of opportunities to learn new things, try out new styles and enjoy the diversity that Iceland offers. The immersive experience means that many return home having significantly advanced in their photography skills and with an increased passion for the art.Key to this experience is a fun, mutually supportive learning environment. If you’re really only interested in what you can get from the tour, this probably isn’t the one for you.OPPORTUNITIES FOR TUITION
The composition of the group (from beginner to seasoned photographers) and the nature of the sites we visit (often big areas with lots of options) means that it isn’t best to stick together as one group. People will want to go off in different directions and take different things.So, at each place we will let you know how best to enjoy the site whilst sitting in the comfort of the minibus. If anyone then wants further tuition/insights we will of course be very happy to provide it, even to accompany you around the site if that would be helpful. With three guides on hand and only 10 participants we have an excellent guide to participant ratio ensuring personalised tuition at every point of the tour.Afterwards, in the minibus we can chat about the experience of that site and explore any questions you might have. Over supper we will have some time to talk about things we’re learning and (time permitting) review photos from the day. Again, this will be optional, and if you'd prefer some down time that is fine.Key to the tour working well for you is taking responsibility for your learning and asking as many questions as you’d like. Really, there is no limit!TIMINGS AT SITES
At the various sites we will have an allocated time. It will be ample to take loads of photographs but will also mean we know the time frame in which we have to operate. Of course, there may be occasions where we will adjust our timings to catch the light, but abiding by these times helps the tour run well.PAYMENT FOR MEALS
At mealtimes people will pay for their own food and drink; we won't be dividing up bills between us. This enables people with different budgets to operate at whatever level suits them.ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
We're committed to reducing our environmental impact as much as possible, including carbon offsetting our flights, respecting local restrictions and minimising our local imprint. We utilise insights from Sustainable Travel to reduce our footprint. They offer great guidance.

Itinerary
The tour starts at 6pm on Saturday 16 October 2027 in Reykjavik with a meet and greet dinner near our hotel for that evening. Then we'll be on the road early Sunday morning to make the most of the day. The tour finishes on Saturday 23 October around 6pm back in Reykjavik.The tour is planned to maximise the time for photography and to mean you can arrive in Iceland from the UK on the Saturday and depart on the Sunday, giving us seven whole days of photography. Those coming from elsewhere may need to arrive ahead of the Saturday to adjust a little to any time difference.DAY 1
At the start we head off towards the south coast for our first day together. Each day begins with a briefing (explaining what we are doing that day and offering a photography project you can work on), and at each site there will be suggestions for what to take. There will be plenty of opportunity to get to know one another as we travel between sites. Our accommodation are fixed points, but our itinerary each day is flexible, which is why it isn't best to share a detailed outline of what we will do each day. Maximum flexibility enables us to make the most of the weather and light.DAY 2-7
Our full days will often start with an early morning shoot (optional for those who prefer a lie in) to catch the blue/golden hour, departing around 6.15am, returning to our accommodation for breakfast around 9.30am.Then we’re on the road, travelling each day further along the south coast capturing amazing images along the way of waterfalls, sea stacks, black beaches, glaciers, and the wonder that is the diamond beach at Jokulsarlon. Luke will also take us to lesser known spots so we can enjoy hidden treasures.Our furthest point East is Stokksnes and the majestic Vestrahorn, after which we will head back towards Reykjavik visiting the things we didn’t stop at on the way out. Our last afternoon and evening will be in Reykjavik, with a final dinner at a great Thai restaurant where we can enjoy reflecting on the tour.We’ll photograph through the day, taking lunch when the light and sites best dictate, giving us maximum flexibility to adjust to the opportunities and conditions of each day.We normally arrive at our accommodation around 6pm, settle in, have an evening meal. For those who like to we share some images from the day and help each other reflect on how we might improve our photography. Then it is an early night ready for an early start the next day, unless we are blessed with the wonder that is the aurora borealis, in which case we might be out to the wee hours of the morning (entirely optional!).As you may have picked up, this is not a holiday for lying in, relaxing in the hot tub or partying into the small hours, but an active tour. We will cover considerable miles, and the days are quite long (especially if we try to see the northern lights). Please be prepared for that. We change accommodation each night, but in the middle of the tour we will stay for two nights in once place, giving those who would like it an opportunity to take a day off and relax.DAY 8
Our final day sees us travelling back to Reykjavik where we will finish our tour around 6pm. For those who like to there will be an optional final dinner in central Reykjavik.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD
We will mainly stay in small hotels and guesthouses close to the key locations we’ll visit. Accommodation in Iceland is generally good, with Wi-Fi available throughout. Whilst we’re not staying in five-star hotels, they are comfortable, warm, clean and provide a good breakfast. Our evening meal is either at the accommodation or restaurants and cafes as near to our accommodation as possible.Lunch will be on the road. This enables maximum flexibility for photography, as we are often in places where there are no eateries for a lunch stop. It is also possible to reduce food costs by taking the basics for lunch with you. We will provide suggestions ahead of the tour.Alcohol is expensive in Iceland, although many enjoy a glass of wine or a beer with their evening meal. Alternatively take some with you (a nip of whisky from your hip flask can be quite restoring in the cold!), or buy it at the duty free in Keflavik airport, as many Icelanders do.
TRANSPORT
We’re partnering with Luke of Secretspotsiceland, who will act us our driver and local guide. Luke has a wealth of knowledge about Iceland, and loves taking groups to unknown or unusual spots. We will be travelling in a comfortable 15-seater Mercedes Sprinter mini-bus. Roads are good, and we will mainly be on tarmac with occasional brief journeys on some less comfortable gravel roads. On some days we will cover reasonably long distances, punctuated with regular stops for picture taking and coffee. Some like to take time in the minibus for a quick snooze!
Practicalities
WEATHER
Weather in Iceland is very changeable. It can be utterly glorious. However, storm force winds, limited visibility, torrential rain and driving snow are not unusual (it adds to the adventure!). We will need to be flexible and change plans according to the weather. Although unlikely, there is the potential for poor weather throughout the week. (One of the things they say in Iceland is that if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change.) You will need wet weather gear for you and your camera equipment (see 'What to Take' below).FITNESS
A moderate level of fitness is required. Most of the sites we visit are close to where we park. However, whilst we won't be going on major hikes, we will be on our feet carrying our camera rucksacks for quite a bit of time each day. One or two sites require some uphill walking (longest walk probably around two hours in total; of course optional). Some of the walking is along paths and tracks. The terrain can be uneven underfoot. If it is particularly cold, it can also be icy. On average, as we potter around, we will cover four to six miles a day.SAFTEY
Iceland is mainly wilderness and can experience extreme weather. Our Icelandic guide will advise us on all safety issues. Whilst there shouldn't be any problems, you do need to make sure you have adequate insurance and are ultimately responsible for your own safety and well-being.WHAT TO TAKE
It is best to travel light. To fit everything in the minibus medium size suitcases and one camera rucksack or equivalent works well (measurements provided). We will provide a comprehensive kit list for both clothes and camera gear, and a series of guides explaining what you will need to help you prepare for the tour over the months leading to our departure.COFFEE BREAKS
For those who are concerned about caffeine and calorie intake, we stop for coffee and cake as regularly as sites allow us (in some places we are in remote locations). The good news is that you get free refills throughout Iceland, and the coffee is generally excellent.

With well over 1,100 thorough reviews of cameras and lenses on his YouTube channel across many different systems, he has probably handled and tested more photography equipment than anyone else in history. He’ll be fully available for anyone wanting advice on how to get the best out of your camera and lenses, and ideas and techniques on how to compose your landscape photography. He hasn't yet worked out how many camera bodies to bring along!
JAMES LAWRENCE is a UK based semi-professional landscape photographer. A trainer and writer in leadership development in his professional life, there is nothing he likes more than a bunch of photographers exploring stunning landscapes in a cold climate. Running photography tours in Iceland, Lofoten and Scotland over the last 10 years is his idea of heaven. Known for his infectious enthusiasm, thorough planning, and thoughtful approach to tuition, he enjoys sharing his passion for photography with others. Oh, and he loves ironing. Someone has to.

What is included in the price?
Accommodation in a single ensuite room with breakfast; all transport during the tour; all tuition; entrance fees to sites.
What will the tuition cover?
Help with composition and understanding light; core technical elements including aperture, shutter speed and ISO along with histograms, bracketing, and aspect ratios; lens choices and how to make the most of your lens; filters and tripods; capturing the northern lights. In essence, we are happy to help with anything you would like to know more about.
What about insurance?
You will need travel insurance to cover you for illness, cancellations, personal accident, as well as equipment insurance. Proof of insurance is a condition of being accepted on the tour.
What will I need to bring?
We will send you a comprehensive list for clothing and your camera equipment, with detailed guides on every item on the lists. Most of it you will already have, some you may be able to borrow.
What will the weather be like?
Iceland is always unpredictable, but generally isn't as cold as people expect (due to the Gulf Stream). Daytime temperatures will be between 0-8C on average, nighttime can go as low as -5-8C. It is likely to be windy, is often wet (rain or snow) and can be icy under foot.
